Whether you're reading a product listing or navigating your phone's display settings, these are the terms you're most likely to encounter.

AMOLED

Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode — a display technology where each pixel produces its own light. This means blacks appear truly black (the pixel simply turns off), and colors tend to look vivid. Commonly found on premium smartphones.

Refresh Rate

How many times per second your screen redraws its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz screen updates 60 times a second; 120 Hz screens look noticeably smoother for scrolling and gaming. Higher rates can also consume more battery.

HDR

High Dynamic Range — a display standard that expands the range between the darkest shadows and brightest highlights in an image. HDR content looks more lifelike on compatible screens, though not all HDR implementations are equal.

Nits

The unit used to measure screen brightness. A higher nit count means the display can get brighter, which is useful for outdoor visibility. Screens rated above 1,000 nits are generally considered very bright.

USB-C

A small, oval-shaped connector standard that can carry power, data, and video signals through a single cable. Many modern laptops, phones, and tablets use USB-C, though the speed and capabilities vary depending on the device.

Bluetooth

A short-range wireless technology that lets devices communicate without cables — used for connecting headphones, keyboards, speakers, and more. Bluetooth versions (e.g., 5.0, 5.3) affect range, speed, and energy efficiency.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)

The current mainstream Wi-Fi standard, designed to handle more devices simultaneously and deliver faster, more stable connections in congested environments like apartment buildings. Compatible devices and routers are both required to benefit.

VPN

Virtual Private Network — software that encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server in another location. Commonly used to improve privacy on public Wi-Fi or to access region-restricted content.

RAM

Random Access Memory — temporary, fast storage that holds the data your device is actively using right now. More RAM generally means smoother multitasking. It is different from storage (where files are saved permanently).

SoC

System on a Chip — a single integrated circuit that combines the processor, graphics, memory controller, and other components. Most modern smartphones and tablets use an SoC rather than separate chips.

Encryption

A process that scrambles data so it can only be read by someone with the correct key or password. Device encryption means that if your phone or laptop is stolen, the data on it is much harder to access.

OTA Update

Over-the-Air Update — a software or firmware update delivered wirelessly to your device, without needing a cable or computer. Keeping OTA updates current is one of the most effective ways to maintain device security.
