Vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients because your body needs them in relatively small amounts — but don't let the prefix fool you. Magnesium
Involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including energy production, muscle function, and blood sugar regulation. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, and dark chocolate are good sources.
Potassium
Helps regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions, and blood pressure. Bananas get the attention, but potatoes, beans, dairy, and leafy greens are equally strong sources.
Zinc
Supports immune function, wound healing, and taste and smell. Found in meat, shellfish (especially oysters), legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Iodine
Critical for thyroid hormone production, which controls metabolism. Iodized salt and seafood are the primary dietary sources in the US.
Selenium
An antioxidant mineral that supports thyroid function and immune defense. Brazil nuts are an exceptionally concentrated source; fish, meat, and whole grains also supply it.

Getting Enough Without Overthinking It

No single food contains everything, which is exactly why variety is the most practical strategy. A diet built around colorful vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes, lean proteins, and some dairy or fortified alternatives covers the overwhelming majority of micronutrient needs for most adults.

A few situations genuinely warrant closer attention: people who avoid all animal products may need to monitor B12, vitamin D, iron, and zinc. Older adults often absorb vitamin D and B12 less efficiently. Pregnant individuals have higher folate and iron needs. In these cases, a healthcare provider can assess whether supplementation makes sense — and at what level.

Supplements can fill specific documented gaps, but they're not a reliable substitute for dietary variety. Many nutrients work better in the context of whole foods, partly because absorption depends on other compounds present alongside them. Adequate hydration also plays a quieter role — water is involved in transporting many nutrients throughout the body.
